APA Division of Psychological Hypnosis Award for Distinguished Contributions to Hypnosis, 2014, American Psychological Association (Division 30). This is the most important award for scientific merit that the Division bestows and is given to “luminaries in our field”.
Bernard B. Raginski Award for Leadership and Achievement in Hypnosis, 2013, Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (USA). This is the highest award bestowed by this Society and was given for outstanding contributions across my career.
Henry Guze Award for the Best Research Paper, 2013, Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (USA). This award is given for the best research paper published on hypnosis in any journal in the previous year.
Arthur Shapiro Award for the Best Book in Hypnosis, 2009, Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (USA). This award was given for my Oxford Handbook of Hypnosis: Theory, Research, and Practice (co-edited with Michael R. Nash), cited by the Award Committee as “This encyclopedic text is a landmark contribution, a tremendous resource for scholars and clinicians alike”.
APA Division of Psychological Hypnosis Best Theoretical Paper, 2007, American Psychological Association (Division 30). This award is given for the best theoretical paper read at the Annual Convention of the APA (Division 30 program).
APA Division of Psychological Hypnosis Award for Early Career Contributions to Hypnosis, 2003, American Psychological Association (Division 30). This award recognises scientific achievement in the area of hypnosis by psychologists who are at an early stage of their research careers.
Early Career Award, 2001, Australian Psychological Society. This award recognises excellence in scientific achievement by psychologists who are at an early stage of their research careers.
NSW “Young Tall Poppy” Award, 2001, Australian Institute of Political Science. This award recognises young Australian researchers who have shown outstanding scholarship, achievements of national or international standing, no more than 10 years postdoctoral experience, and community engagement and communication skills. It was awarded for the range of achievements and activities in which I have been engaged since completion of my doctoral thesis.
The Australian Skeptics Eureka Prize for Critical Thinking, 1997, Australian Museum. This is a $10,000 prize for a body of work that investigates beliefs that owe little or nothing to the rigours of scientific method and promotes rational thinking in the community. It was awarded for the body of work undertaken in my doctoral thesis.

Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree Research Supervision, 2011, Macquarie University. This is a $4,000 award for Macquarie University’s PhD Supervisor of the Year. Each year the winners in each of the four Faculties are considered for the Vice-Chancellor’s Award.
Faculty of Human Sciences Award for Excellence in Higher Degree Research Supervision, 2011, Macquarie University. This is a $1,500 award for the Faculty’s PhD Supervisor of the Year.
John Clarke Memorial Award in Psychology, 1994, University of New South Wales. This is a $1,000 award for postgraduate research concerned with ongoing problems of the community, particularly the behaviour of the “whole person” in a social milieau. It was awarded for the conceptual and empirical approach undertaken in my doctoral thesis.
